Following is an article sent to me from Paul Meyer. Enjoy and have a blessed weekend.
If You Don’t Have Discipline, You Don’t Have Anything!
A high IQ, a fabulous education, influential friends, big plans for
the future, and plenty of opportunities for success do not actually
guarantee success. People with these ingredients and more fail
every day.
Why is that? They are missing the one ingredient that is an
absolute “must have.”
They are missing self-discipline.
Self-discipline is the training through which you acquire the
habits, attitude, and perseverance required to achieve in every
area of life. In short…
Discipline is what you need to get you where you want to go!
Most successful people aren’t necessarily smarter than anyone else
– they just have the discipline to keep going after others have
thrown in the towel.
The great inventor, Thomas Edison, said he simply finished what
others had started! Discipline allows you to “keep at it” until you
succeed.
If you have discipline, you can have anything!
If you weren’t taught good habits of self-discipline as a child and
therefore still struggle in this area, don’t despair. It is never
too late to begin. There are five major components that will help
you create the discipline you want and need.
Five components of discipline:
#1) Firm values
Define what you believe and why you believe it. This will encourage
you to “stay the course.”
#2) Challenging goals
Clearly define your goals and write them down. Definite deadlines
assure your arrival at your destination.
#3) Clear priorities
Decide what you want to accomplish. How you plan to get there
allows you to clarify where to place your greatest time and
attention.
#4) Persistence
Continue to persist long after others have given up. This is a
consistent trait of all winners.
#5) Personal inspiration
Never wait to be inspired. Working toward a goal with commitment
and purpose creates the inspiration you need.
Principles to remember:
>> Discipline ranks in the “must have” category for reaching your goals.
>> You can have every other advantage in life and still fail if you lack discipline.
>> Discipline is the training ground that produces the habits,
attitudes, and perseverance required to fulfill your dreams.
>> You can learn discipline by applying the five components of
creating discipline.
>> People who succeed are not necessarily smarter or better than you
– they simply persevered when others gave up.
ACTION STEPS TO TAKE NOW — to create discipline:
Step #1: Take a quick inventory of the areas of your character or
life in which you lack discipline.
You might already be aware of these areas. If you need some
objective insight, ask someone who knows you well to help. Be
completely honest!
Step #2: For each area you have listed, write down three simple
things you can implement right away to start creating discipline in
this area.
Setting small goals in the beginning is insurance against becoming
discouraged and giving up. Every journey starts with a single step!
Step #3: Find someone to whom you can be accountable.
Checking in with someone on a weekly or monthly basis can provide
added incentive to stay on course. You can partner with someone who
is also working on his or her discipline. This significantly
increases your level of discipline, and therefore your chances of
success!
Step #4: Plan in advance ways to celebrate your progress.
You will work harder with a reward in sight.
To Your Success,
